Something broken about the email digest mechanism?
Just today I've started getting some digest emails referring to threads that don't show any recent updates.
Is anyone else experiencing the same?

I've seen the same. I got an email that had a bunch of my own answers in it, although I hadn't changed any of them. What threads did you see in that email?
Interesting. It might be related to the recipient's content then; I didn't see anything about that post, but I did get notified about content (answers) I'd added a while back that had not been changed.
We resolved an issue with the site not sending updates when Answers were provided. This fix had a side-effect of going back to old posts and triggering email. Sorry for this but it was a one-time event we didn't see in other environments.
