When IRIS 2023.2 reaches general availability, we’ll be making some improvements to how we tag and distribute IRIS & IRIS for Health containers.

IRIS containers have been tagged using the full build number format, for example 2023.1.0.235.1.  Customers have been asking for more stable tags, so they don’t need to change their dockerfiles/Kubernetes files every time a new release is made.  With that in mind, we’re making the following changes to how we tag container images.

The first developer preview of InterSystems IRIS 2024.2 and InterSystems IRIS for Health 2024.2 has been posted to the WRC developer preview site.  Containers are not available for this preview, but we’ll be sure to post them next time.

This is the earliest in the release cycle that we’ve ever posted a developer preview and there aren’t any “highlight” worthy features that are complete.  I’ll list them as they get closer to done in future preview releases.

Initial documentation can be found at these links below.

InterSystems has encountered a defect that causes some upgrades of HealthShare® Health Connect to fail. This only affects instances that are not licensed for the use of FHIR® and that have interoperability-enabled namespaces. Under these conditions, the upgrade fails with an <HSFHIRErr> error.

This defect only impacts upgrades to version 2024.1 of HealthShare Health Connect.

The affected version, 2024.1.0.263.0, has been removed from distribution.  A new Point Release is available:

InterSystems introduced this feature many years ago and a time when using Public Key Infrastructure was not yet widely used. Creating materials for use with Public Key Infrastructure is now widely available, and InterSystems is observing a decline in using the InterSystems PKI. In addition, investments would be required to securely use it. The IRIS PKI documentation stated for years:

The InterSystems PKI is for testing purposes only. Do not use it in a production setting.

As of today March 26, 2024, the InterSystems PKI is now deprecated.

The product documentation has been updated and now states:

Are you using HealthShare® Health Connect? You should know that starting with version 2024.1, a private web server (PWS) will no longer be included in installations.

It is recommended that you migrate to an external production-grade web server to ensure security. Benefits include:

  • Only one web server is needed for all your instances.
  • You can take charge of security by keeping your web server up to date—no need to wait for the next InterSystems release.

See how to migrate to an external web server(video series, 10m).

For your convenience InterSystems is posting the typical install steps for the operating systems that are supported with InterSystems IRIS.

For Microsoft Windows, please consult the InterSystems product documentation.

The IRIS installer will detect if a web server is installed on the same machine, which gives you the option to automatically have the web server configured.

All Apache installations will require sudo (recommended) or root permission to install the web server. This requirement supports recommended best practices.

InterSystems has decided to stop further development of the InterSystems IRIS Natural Language Processing, formerly known as iKnow, technology and label it as deprecated as of the 2023.3 release of InterSystems IRIS. InterSystems will continue to support existing customers using the technology, but does not recommend starting new development projects outside of the core text exploration use cases it was originally designed for. Other use cases involving natural language are increasingly well-served using novel techniques based on Large Language Models, an area InterSystems is also
